Film maker Claudia Lee and I had received funding from the London Symphony Orchestra to make a film in collaboration with a local youth centre. After the first few sessions no kids turned up, so we decided to walk out onto the local estate with a youth worker. We asked children the simple question, ‘If you could write a song, who would it be for and why?’ We came across a girl who answered, ‘I would write it for my Auntie Jackie. She died of bone cancer.’
I told the girl that I had booked a music studio nearby at LSO St Lukes – and still had half an hour on the booking. Would she and a couple of friends like to come along right now and write something? The film is a documentary of what happened next.
