100 VOICES // NHS is an immersive work of sound art enabling audiences the opportunity to listen to a unique and multi-layered snapshot of the NHS expressed directly by people rarely heard.
Recorded in 12 hospitals across the U.K and interwoven with an original musical score and four newly commissioned operatic arias, the work platforms the voices of patients, visiting local communities and the invisible, extended workforce of the NHS.
100 people in one time, in one place. Heard as unique individuals.
Speaking as one community in one space.
100 VOICES is presented to audiences inside a specially designed wooden ‘sound house’, abirch wood cylinder, immersing audiences in 360 degree surround- sound.
100 people reflect on their daily lives and work, their challenges, joys, inspirations and losses.
They are heard as individuals and collectively in synthetic digital vocal transformations; as a crowd, as a flock of voices, as a sonic tidal wave. The spoken words and songs are seamlessly interwoven in a durational piece of 1 hour, created after five months of research and conversations with staff, patients and visitors in 12 hospitals across 4 NHS Foundation Trusts in Bristol, London, Cambridge and Preston.
